Daniel EverettConversations with a Computer (2008)

Contained within the operating system of Mac computers is a rudimentary electronic psychotherapist program. Meant to simulate a Rogerian therapist, it engages the participant in a cyclical conversation by taking his or her statements and roughly reconfiguring them into questions. I met with this program three times a week for a month in order to discuss my fear that I was disappearing completely. These are three stills from our conversations.

glassbattalion:

Me in the Užupis Republic in Vilnius, Lithuania. The "Užupis Republic" is a tiny, aspiring breakaway republic of bohemians.  According to Wikipedia, Užupis means "on the other side of the river" in Lithuania, and indeed, the Vilnia river demarcates the boundary of this artist section from the rest of Vilnius. On this same wall is a constitution for the republic, with articles like "People have the right to live by the River Vilnelė, while the River Vilnelė has the right to flow past people," and "A dog has the right to be a dog."

I don't know how my hairdresser (and ex-landlord and friend) got me so much today but she gave me a Traci Lords haircut and a teasing comb. Amazing.

G R I M E S: I don't want to have to compromise my morals in order to make a living :

actuallygrimes:

i dont want my words to be taken out of context

i dont want to be infantilized because i refuse to be sexualized

i dont want to be molested at shows or on the street by people who perceive me as an object that exists for their personal satisfaction

softmotherswimming:

So you're on your knees? Good. Now die to yourself. To your idea of yourself. Everything you think you are, you're not. What's left? Find out. Stop. Stop thinking. You people all want to help someone. Help yourself first, like the airplane. Put on your own mask first.  All you hear are your own crazy thoughts like a river of shit running on and on. See your thoughts for what they are. Stop your helping. Stop your planning. Give up! There's no way out! Not for others, not for you. We are living out here at the end of the road, the end of the Earth in a place called "Paradise". How's it going? Perfect? No! You are madder than ever. You are tired? So lie down right here. Be like a cat. Heal yourself. There is no match for the tremendous intelligence of the body. Rest.

Wat is thiiss

Holy. This.
